An incredible reaction of the men from the State to an innocuous distribution of leaflets.

par Guillaume Truttmann, le 26/05/06

Dear Members,
Dear Sympathizers,

Once more, we regret to announce that freedom of expression is denied to French classical free-market enthusiasts (called "Liberals," in France, which may be confusing for Americans.)

Yesterday, in front of the Paris building where the UMP (President Chirac's party, and the party of some of his Ministers who will be competing for the presidency in 2007) was holding a committee meeting, one of our partisans was distributing invitations to a festival that we are organizing for June (see http://www.fetedelaliberte.com/). At UMP's request, almost 40 policemen surrounded our lone colleague and escorted him with authority to the nearest subway entrance, forcing him to board a train.

WE ARE NOT TERRORISTS! JUST FREE-MARKET LIBERALS!

We are surprised that a political party that describes itself as democratic would use this methodology, all the more since our partisan, compliant and respectful of his interlocutors, was in no way disturbing the peace. And even if he had had that intention, would he have "armed" himself with nothing more violent than a pile of paper?

How can anyone not be shocked by such a disproportionate use of force?

Apparently, the rational use of public money is not the first priority of our Minister of the Interior (Mr. Sarkozy.) He might have put those means to better use by unblocking the demonstrators' illegal occupation of schools and universities last month.

It would seem, therefore, that in France, it is more appropriate to paralyze the whole country than to distribute a few flyers in the street. Our peace officers prefer to stamp out freedom of expression than defend our freedom to get an education.

The UMP would be advised to use the police not to suppress us, but rather to inspire the nation towards the free-market solutions that we at Liberte Cherie hold dearest.

The Directors of the Liberte Cherie Association
